Anyone got some tips on what sorts of promotion have been most effective?

From our stats I can see that links in signatures on YahooAnswers has produced the most traffic consistently.
The missus does The Medical Minute Podcast, and she answers a lot of medical questions on YahooAnswers.
My long term strategy is simply to maintain an online presence in as many places as is humanly possible.
Greater chance of being 'discovered' that way.
I know people who have had us as their introduction to podcasting, which is kind of nice.

A couple of things to consider, if you haven't already.

Facebook pages are effectively mini websites and as such they can be found by the search engines.

Stumble Upon seems to be one of the hottest traffic referrers at the moment.

Article directories - write an article about you business and submit it to the many Article Directories (Google search "Article Directories"), these are used by on and off line editors around the world. They will give you a credit and a link if they use your story. Tip: Professional journalist written pieces work best.

Hope this gives you some ideas.

Thanks, Gordon.
Have a personal Facebook page (for family/friends), but have not used FB for promotion.
Have used StumbleUpon, but not with any effectiveness so far.
Maybe I don't know how to utilise it correctly.
Hadn't even thought of article directories.
Cheers!
Would podcastmatters Ltd be able to assist us indie podcasters for an affordable (ie modest!) fee? I;m hoping Gordon reads this.

Some time ago you asked me if I would be willing to assist you but you never got back to me with any details. Perhaps you can tell me a bit about what you feel you need assistance with.

I don't know how you got on with the StumbleUpon tip. I have recently put together some instructions for a client and thought they might be of interest to you.

Step 1: Go to http://www.stumbleupon.com and complete the registration process. (Note: The service is not available on the Safari browser, it works on Internet Explorer and Firefox)
Step 2: You will be asked if you want to add Stumbleupon to your browser bar – proceed with this step
Step 3: Once StumbleUpon has been installed on your browser you will see the StumbleUpon logo and small “thumbs up” and “thumbs down” icons
Step 4: Go to your on web site - "http://www.yourdomain.co.uk" and when the page appears on the screen, click on the “thumbs up” sign,
Step 5: You will then get a box where you enter a short description
Step 6: Enter some key tag words
Step 7: Submit

It looks like a long process but, the whole thing should take less than 5 minutes and it will drive traffic to the site.

Regards

Gordon
