After attending the PPME2006 and hearing Leo Laporte give his keynote telling us to 'spread the word', we did just that.
Contacted both local newspapers.
And emailed Oprah.com suggesting that Oprah was in a unique position to 'spread the word' about podcasting.
Never heard back from Oprah.com.
Today Oprah has the the #1 podcast on iTunes and has started using Skype for long-distance interviews.
Not exactly what we had in mind, oh well...
So, out of the Top 100 podcasts on iTunes, where do the top 10 independent podcasts rank?
By independent I mean not produced by major media outlets that were already producing content for the media before the advent of podcasting.
I think it's important to remember that, while the glut of mainstream media names (in the UK mostly repackaged BBC) in the top 100 of iTunes is annoying to the indie producer, it's actually a good thing.
Back in 2005 when iTunes first supported podcasts it was possible, as an indie, take get even as far as the top 10. But podcasts where still relatively unknown/unheard of, and therefore, had smaller audiences.
Nowadays with people like Oprah talking up their podcast on iTunes they're pushing new eyes and ears to the iTunes podcast page there's a greater chance of finding new audiences for everyone.
